Modern Apprenticeships are Made for Business

In today’s dynamic work environment, upskilling has become a crucial strategy for career advancement and organisational growth. One inspiring example is the journey of Catriona Morgan who has worked at St Philips School for over sixteen years as a domestic supervisor.

She has recently moved to an Administrator / Receptionist role and used the Modern Apprenticeship in Business Administration at SCQF Level 6 as part of her development programme to make the transition.  This transformation has not only enhanced Catriona’s career prospects but also keeps valuable skills within the school.

Catriona’s position involves a variety of responsibilities, including managing communications, scheduling appointments, handling administrative tasks, and providing excellent customer service. Key skills needed for her role include:

  • Communication Skills: Effective verbal and written communication to interact with staff, pupils, and external stakeholders
  • Organisational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, maintain records, and ensure a clutter-free workspace
  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with office software, scheduling tools, and communication platforms.
  • Customer Service: Providing a welcoming and supportive environment for staff, pupils and visitors

The Modern Apprenticeship in Business Administration at SCQF Level 6 is designed to equip individuals with the skills and knowledge needed for reception and administrative roles. The program includes a combination of on-the-job training and learning, covering essential topics such as:

  • Managing Workload: Techniques for prioritising tasks and managing time effectively.
  • Communication and Planning: Strategies for effective communication and planning within a business environment.
  • Customer Service: Best practices for delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Document Production and Design: Skills for creating and managing business documents

Upskilling Catriona to her receptionist role through the Modern Apprenticeship in Business Administration at SCQF Level 6 was a win-win for both Catriona and St Philips School. It has empowered her with new skills and knowledge while enhancing the operational efficiency of the school. By investing in upskilling, organisations can build a resilient and adaptable workforce ready to meet future challenges.
