Investing in the Future of Glass & Glazing: McLaughlan Glaziers and Modern Apprenticeships

With a recognised shortage of qualified glaziers across the industry, McLaughlan Glaziers recognised the importance of investing in future talent and developing skilled employees for the long term. The business chose to engage with the Modern Apprenticeship programme to help address skills shortages, develop new talent and strengthen the future of the trade.

One of those apprentices is Matthew Stewart, who is nearing completion of his Glass & Glazing Modern Apprenticeship. Through a combination of workplace learning, practical experience and support from both his employer and assessor, Matthew has developed valuable industry skills while building confidence in his role.

Matthew initially chose to undertake the qualification to gain an additional skill for life. Throughout his apprenticeship, he has developed practical glass processing and installation skills, including cutting glass for single glazing, fitting double-glazed units, and carrying out sash and putty glazing work.

Like many apprentices, Matthew found the paperwork elements of the qualification challenging at times. However, with support from his assessor, employer and workplace colleagues, he was able to overcome these challenges and continue progressing successfully through the programme.

The employer has reported noticeable improvements in skills, confidence, understanding of industry standards and problem-solving abilities since Matthew began his apprenticeship. They also highlighted the importance of apprenticeships in helping to address the shortage of qualified glaziers within the sector.

Reflecting on his journey, Matthew said:

“I’m delighted to be almost complete and looking forward to continued learning.”

McLaughlan Glaziers currently has one apprentice who has recently completed and another approaching completion, demonstrating their continued commitment to developing the next generation of skilled glaziers. The company also described RT Resources as “a lifeline” in supporting training within a specialist trade facing skills shortages.
