Overcoming Barriers to Achievement

Overcoming Barriers to Achievement

As part of your induction to the Modern Apprenticeship scheme your Assessor will discuss any additional support you may need to help achieve your qualification. The team at RT Resources are highly experienced in dealing with candidates with dyslexia, dyscalcular, autism, poor mental health and other disabilities.

Keir Young has recently completed Health & Social Care L2 as a Modern Apprentice at Torrance Lodge.

Keir told us that he has been working at Torrance Lodge for three years and explained that the qualification is required to be registered with the SSSC.  Keir explained that he has Dyslexia and therefore found some parts of the course quite challenging.  He said to overcome this difficulty he asked some colleagues and friends and family to proofread statements and that his assessor, Julie, offered additional support when needed. He said that the support that Julie gave was fantastic and encouraged him to complete the qualification so quickly.

Keir said that he found reflecting on his work practice the most beneficial part of the qualification.  He added,

“It is very easy to just go in and do your job, but taking this qualification forced me to look at how and why I had completed tasks in certain ways, and how I could improve in the future.  Communication is key with our residents, and I think I have now greatly improved methods of communication with our service users throughout our care home.”

Fiona Logan, Training Officer at Ayrshire Care Homes said,

“As a company we like to see our staff develop themselves within the industry and are happy to support this in order to have a well rounded trained staff base.  RT Resources are a great provider as they are flexible with the working lives of the candidates and they are able to complete the award with minimal changes to their day to day working lives which makes it more accessible to staff as many can’t commit to “day-release” to college or college full time.

Unlike college the MA approach through RT Resources encourages the candidate to take ownership of their qualification which can be a change from the last type of education so some candidates can find adjusting to that a bit challenging.  Our staff have good support from their Assessors and also support from the company in checking with them. The regular review meetings with the assessors allow for discussion of progress and where they are so it allows them to have a good idea of progress and set goals for the coming period.

There is definitely a greater understanding of health and social care amongst those who have completed the Modern Apprenticeship, and we are very happy with the working relationship between RT Resources and Ayrshire Care Homes.”
