Supporting Careers in Social Services & Healthcare

RT Resources have worked with Key for a long time and have had the pleasure of supporting some of their team achieve qualifications under the Modern Apprenticeship (MA) scheme.

Bernadette McCaig has recently completed SSHC L2 as a Modern Apprentice at Key.

Bernie told us that she has worked at Key for 12 years, and within Health & Social Care for most of her working life.  She explained that because of registration with SSSC, she needed to complete the SVQ L2 qualification and was offered a place to do this under the MA scheme.

Bernie is extremely experienced in her work practice, and she said that once she had started the qualification, she found it quite easy to progress to completion, as she was simply writing about her day-to-day work tasks.

As part of the MA Bernie also had to complete core skills, which initially puzzled her. However, Bernie said,

“Once I realised, I was just providing evidence of things I already knew how to do, I was able to complete the core skills assessments with very little support.”

Allison Wright has had a lengthy career in Social Services and Healthcare, having worked at Quarriers for twenty years, where latterly her role was in Learning and Development.  Allison explained that she missed operational aspects and so applied for a Support and Development Manager role with Key. After 7 years in this role, she was successful in applying for an Area Manager role.

As part of her SSSC registration requirements she had to complete the L9 SSHC qualification, which she undertook as a Modern Apprentice with RT Resources.

Allison said that she started the qualification at the same time as her new job and also during the Covid pandemic. Therefore, she found keeping to the deadlines challenging.  She explained that although she works well to deadlines, it was sometimes hard to meet these given the responsibilities of a new post and the additional pressure of Covid. Allison said

“The support and understanding from my manager was great, and my Assessor was fantastic.  She was able to extend deadlines where required and offered a brilliant amount of support and encouragement, and I completed it only slightly out with the timescale.”

“We have worked with RT Resources since they were established and have developed a positive and successful working relationship with them. The Modern Apprenticeship scheme has been a successful route to date for many of our staff to achieve a relevant qualification to their work role.

Our staff feedback that they appreciate the opportunity to reflect on their practice and that their knowledge and skills are recognised through achieving a professional qualification. Both staff and their managers comment on the increased confidence and focus around their work practice after completing their qualifications. We are delighted to continue our strong working relationship with RT Resources.
